CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common lung diseases in adults. Chronic inflammation causes persistent and progressive damage to the structure of the airways (bronchi). The bronchial wall increases in thickness and mucus production, restricting airflow in and out of the lungs. These changes lead to increased susceptibility to external factors such as viral infections and climatic changes.
COPD is most often caused by long-term exposure to irritating smoke, fumes, dust or chemicals. Cigarette smoke is the most common cause. The two most common types of COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. These two conditions usually occur together and can vary in severity in people with COPD.

COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Patients with COPD report difficulty breathing, a daily cough that brings up mucus, and a tight, whistling sound in the lungs called wheezing. In advanced stages, the patient may become breathless with minimal exertion and require supplemental oxygen.

OUR METHOD

THE TREATMENT

Moviglia Method therapy is a simple and effective procedure. Here's a step-by-step guide to what patients can expect:

EVALUATION PRETREATMENT

Clinical evaluation is complemented with Pulmonary function tests (Spirometry, lung diffusion, oximetry) and imaging (Chest X ray and CT scan).

HARVESTING

Two types of cells are needed for the treatment: stem cells and tissue-specific effector lymphocytes. The stem cells are extracted from subcutaneous fat, which is done by performing a micro liposuction procedure that only needs local anesthesia. Immune cells are obtained from the patient's peripheral blood.

CELL PROCESSING

The collected fat is processed to isolate and expand the stem cells. The combination of the stem cells and the tissue specific effector lymphocytes facilitates the pre differentiation of the stem cells into the specific cells that the tissue needs to repair the damage (lung and vascular structures).

CELL APPLICATION

Pre-differentiated cells together with tissue-specific lymphocytes are given by intravenous infusion. The infusion is repeated every 4 to 8 weeks for one year. Lung function tests are performed every 6 months.

Results

RESULTS

Treated patients report a slow and progressive improvement in symptoms. The feeling of breathlessness, coughing and mucus production decrease. Tolerance to physical exertion increases. Viral infections are easier to control.

Response to treatment may also be reflected in improvement in complementary studies.

It is recommended to complement the cellular treatment with respiratory re-education and aerobic exercise.
